The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN (FAO) reports that 690million people are chronically hungry and 2billion people suffer from micronutrient deficiency. 1/3 of adults are obese or overweight and food waste is at 30%. As the population grows, food production must increase which contributes to 20% of green-house-gases (GHGs). The food system also emits 34% of global GHGs, drives biodiversity loss, and creates negative environmental health outcomes.

According to the FAO's report in 2019 on the State of Food and Agriculture, 14% of world goods are lost after they are harvested and before they reach super markets. At the same time, the UNEP Food Waste Index Report, note that after food reaches supermarkets and our kitchens, 17% of it ends up being wasted.
